Anchor:Before a packed Senate hearing room and dozens of cameras, the heads of America’s embattled automakers– General Motors, Ford and Chrysler– came back to Washington urgently looking for help.

Their mission: convince Congress to authorize $34 billion in loans and credit lines, saying they will restructure , and cut models, jobs and executive pay to remain viable .

Rick Wagoner is the chairman and CEO of General Motors — which is asking the federal government for $18 billion in loans, including $4 billion by the end of December to ensure its survival.
