The convoy was heading in the direction of Xiahe village, home to the famous Labrang Tibetan Buddhist Monastery.

“We demand the total independence of Tibet – freedom, equality and peace and happiness. Many have been killed in Aba area, about twenty and many have been killed Maqu area in different villages. All over Tibet there is uprising, that’s why all these areas, Maqu and Luqu and others, the demonstrations are happening.”

Chinese security forces have blocked both foreigners and news reporters from entering sensitive areas of Southwest China. That’s because there are some reports of protests in those areas.

But the censorship alone speaks volumes. The Foreign Correspondents Club of China said in a statement that reporters had been blocked from reporting in 30 separate incidents. These include being tailed by authorities and having their footage confiscated.

The BBC reported that one of their teams snuck through police checkpoints near Hezuo City. They found the streets deserted, shops closed, and police vehicles patrolling the streets.

Meanwhile, the Free Tibet Campaign released some graphic images of China’s crackdown on the Tibetan protesters. And the photographs weren’t taken in Tibet, they were taken in southwest China on Sunday.

The Chinese communist leadership maintains that the death toll from this weekend’s riots is just 13 people. But the Tibetan government-in-exile says their contacts in Tibet found 99 dead bodies. These protests are believed to have been the biggest in two years.
