【講解】
獨生女，英文就是the only daughter。Privilege: 特權。Close relative: 親密家屬。第二句較長，是由分詞片語+主要子句+介係詞片語所構成的，分解開來寫就是：
Princess Sayako abandoned her privileged status as a member of the imperial family Princess.
Sayako and her groom, Yoshiki Kuroda,40, were wed in the presence of close relatives including the emperor and empress.

STORY: Marriage to Kuroda, an urban planner, means Sayako relinquishes her title, swapping the grandeur of the Imperial Palace for an ordinary apartment.
【講解】
Marriage to Kuroda, 是說嫁給黑田慶樹的這椿婚姻，主詞是Marriage婚姻，後面接一個介係詞片語作名詞marriage的後位修飾。a urban planner，就是Kuroda的同位語，同時說明Kuroda的職業。
放棄我們一般用give up, abandon, 英文素養再好點就喜歡用renounce，更好點就用到這裡的relinquish這個字，所以我們可以把這四個都是“放棄”的同義字一塊記起來。
Swap是轉換的意思，其實就是change的意思,再提昇點層次就會用 alter, swap, switch等，是不是看起來有學問多了呢？但其實意思是一樣的。
Means後面省略了that，是一個名詞子句。Swapping則是引導一個分詞片語。
【譯文】:紀宮公主與從事都市計劃工作的黑田慶樹的這椿婚姻，意味著得放棄她的頭銜，離開豪華的王室宮殿，轉換到一般的公寓當中。
The newlyweds will live in a rented apartment not far from the palace before moving to a new condominium to be completed next year.
【講解】
我們曾經講過「後面說明前面」的修飾原則。這一句介係詞片語的部份就是對rented apartment所作的後位修飾。Not far from the palace是說這租來的公寓與王宫不遠；before moving to a new condominium，是表示時間的介係詞片語，修飾主要子句；to be completed next year則是a new condominium的後位修飾，說明這幢新的有產權的公寓將會在明年完成。
【譯文】:
在搬到明年才會落成有產權的新公寓前，這對新人將會住在離王宮不遠的出租公寓中。

Shigeru Kotani, a 76-year-old man who came to the palace to sign a book of well wishes for the new couple says: “The Imperial princess has always been not strictly formal like other imperial family members, and says he feels a stronger affinity with her.”

The couple’s life after the wedding will be cushioned by Sayako’s $1.29 million dowry from the state.

In an apparent attempt to fit in with Kuroda’s common life Sayako has spent time brushing up her cooking skills as well as giving up her part-time job as a researcher at an ornithology centre in Chiba, near Tokyo.

很明顯地是為了要適應黑田慶樹的平民生活，紀宮花了時間溫習她的烹飪技巧，並且放棄她在鄰近東京的千葉市鳥類學中心兼職研究員的工作。
If the government enacts proposed legal changes that give women the same right as men to inherit the throne and to retain their titles on marriage, Sayako may be the last princess to leave the royal family.
【講解】
enact就是impose制定的意思。That是 名詞子句還是形容詞子句呢？答案是形容詞子句。為什麼呢？因為that後面直接接動詞的話，就是形容詞子子；that後面如果有完整的主詞+動詞的話，就是名詞子句。這邊的that就是作為關係代名詞，代表legal changes。
這一句挺長的，主結構就是副詞子句+主要子句。只是這個if所引導的副詞子句稍嫌複雜些。複雜的原因主要是legal changes的後位修飾造成的，為了要進一步說明這是個什麼樣的法律改變。
The proposed legal changes give women the same right as men. 這項建議中的法律修正案，給予女性與男性相同的權利。那麼是什麼權利呢？進一步再用不定詞片語to inherit the throne與to retain their titles on marriage說明。
所以主結構就是：If the government enacts proposed legal changes, Sayako may be the last princess to leave the royal family.
【譯文】:
如果政府制定法律修正案，給予女性與男性相同的繼承王位的權利，並且在婚姻中仍保留她們的頭銜，紀宮可能就會是最後一位必須因為婚姻而離開王室的公主。
