China’s state-controlled Catholic Church is preparing to name a new bishop. But the lead candidate–Reverend Joseph Shen Guo’an–does not have the backing of the Vatican.
Shen is expected to be ordained next Thursday in Wuhan diocese in central China. Many Catholics oppose the move because Shen doesn’t have approval from the Pope.
The Chinese Communist Party has no diplomatic ties with the Vatican. The Party refuses to recognize the Vatican’s assertion that it alone has the right to appoint bishops.
