Models and designers are preparing to strut their stuff at New York Fashion Week, which will showcase the Fall Winter 2010 collections.

As a weak economy continues to cast a shadow over the $45 billion dollar fashion retail market, some designers feel it’s time to break out.

Designer Devi Kroell is known for her exotic and sophisticated styles, and for using lush fabrics for her collection.

[Devi Kroell, Designer]:
“The materials are super luxurious. I mean, you have the beautiful silks that I developed with the mills in Italy, France, and beautiful tweed fabrics that I developed with English mills, so it’s really about stepping the luxury game up. This might sound a little bit strange in these economic times, but today, I think, if you really want to motivate people to buy something, it really has to be the best, and it has to be a really emotional buy, or they won’t buy.”
[Devi Kroell,

After 15 years, New York Fashion week is packing up its tents at Bryant Park and moving to Lincoln Center.

[Fern Mallis, Director New York Fashion Week]:
“You know, that, like everything else in the world, things change and iconic buildings come down and stadiums, you know, get destroyed and re-built in new places and so, we are fashion’s ‘Yankee Stadium’ this season.”
[Fern Mallis,
Mallis says that despite so much dire economic news, she does see some positive trends emerging in the world of fashion.

[Fern Mallis, Director New York Fashion Week]:

“I don’t think it’s perfect but I think people have figured out a rhythm of how to do business in this kind of climate. I think it’s been an interesting learning curve for a lot of designers and a lot of companies to really focus strongly on who their customer is and not try to be all things to all people.”
[Fern Mallis, New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion week is expected to bring over $200 million in visitor spending to the city.
