Two days later Ian and I met again in a cafe.
Upon sitting down I returned the taxi fare to him and thanked his kindness. He smiled shyly and put the money into the pocket of his coat.
“I’ve confirmed that the news is true. I’ll do a detailed report on it.”
“That’s great.”
“Do you have Miss Chen’s recent photo? Better we can have one for the report.”
“We’ll try to get it as soon as possible.”
Upon the brief meeting Ian walked me to the subway. On the way he asked me question after question, “Why do you practice Falun Gong? Why did you learn English after learning Japanese?”…
There was so much I wanted to share with him I didn’t know where to start with.
When we were about to say goodbye in the subway, Ian suddenly asked me earnestly, “Can you do me a favor?”
“Sure.”
He instantly took out the money I had just returned to him from the pocket of his coat like lightening and put it into the pocket of my coat.
Before I could react, he had bounced far away and was waving goodbye to me mischievously.
