Princess Sayako, the only daughter of Japan’s Emperor Akihito wed a commoner in a private ceremony at a Tokyo hotel on Tuesday. Abandoning her privileged status as a member of the imperial family Princess Sayako and groom, Yoshiki Kuroda,40, were wed in the presence of close relatives including the emperor and empress.

独生女，英文就是the only daughter。Privilege: 特权。Close relative: 亲密家属。第二句较长，是由分词词组+主要子句+介系词词组所构成的，分解开来写就是：

STORY: Marriage to Kuroda, an urban planner, means Sayako relinquishes her title, swapping the grandeur of the Imperial Palace for an ordinary apartment.

【讲解】

Marriage to Kuroda, 是说嫁给黑田庆树的这椿婚姻，主词是Marriage婚姻，后面接一个介系词词组作名词marriage的后位修饰。a urban planner，就是Kuroda的同位语，同时说明Kuroda的职业。

放弃我们一般用give up, abandon, 英文素养再好点就喜欢用renounce，更好点就用到这里的relinquish这个字，所以我们可以把这四个都是“放弃”的同义字一块记起来。

Swap是转换的意思，其实就是change的意思,再提升点层次就会用 alter, swap, switch等，是不是看起来有学问多了呢？但其实意思是一样的。

Means后面省略了that，是一个名词子句。Swapping则是引导一个分词词组。

【译文】:纪宫公主与从事都市计划工作的黑田庆树的这椿婚姻，意味着得放弃她的头衔，离开豪华的王室宫殿，转换到一般的公寓当中。

我们曾经讲过“后面说明前面”的修饰原则。这一句介系词词组的部分就是对rented apartment所作的后位修饰。Not far from the palace是说这租来的公寓与王宫不远；before moving to a new condominium，是表示时间的介系词词组，修饰主要子句；to be completed next year则是a new condominium的后位修饰，说明这幢新的有产权的公寓将会在明年完成。

【译文】:

在搬到明年才会落成有产权的新公寓前，这对新人将会住在离王宫不远的出租公寓中。

In an apparent attempt to fit in with Kuroda’s common life Sayako has spent time brushing up her cooking skills as well as giving up her part-time job as a researcher at an ornithology centre in Chiba, near Tokyo.

很明显地是为了要适应黑田庆树的平民生活，纪宫花了时间温习她的烹饪技巧，并且放弃她在邻近东京的千叶市鸟类学中心兼职研究员的工作。

If the government enacts proposed legal changes that give women the same right as men to inherit the throne and to retain their titles on marriage, Sayako may be the last princess to leave the royal family.

【讲解】

enact就是impose制定的意思。That是 名词子句还是形容词子句呢？答案是形容词子句。为什么呢？因为that后面直接接动词的话，就是形容词子子；that后面如果有完整的主词+动词的话，就是名词子句。这边的that就是作为关系代名词，代表legal changes。

这一句挺长的，主结构就是副词子句+主要子句。只是这个if所引导的副词子句稍嫌复杂些。复杂的原因主要是legal changes的后位修饰造成的，为了要进一步说明这是个什么样的法律改变。

The proposed legal changes give women the same right as men. 这项建议中的法律修正案，给予女性与男性相同的权利。那么是什么权利呢？进一步再用不定词词组to inherit the throne与to retain their titles on marriage说明。

所以主结构就是：If the government enacts proposed legal changes, Sayako may be the last princess to leave the royal family.

【译文】:
