When Wang Xia was born in 1929, China was a republic and Nanjing was its bustling capital. Since then, the city has endured invasion and massacre by Japanese troops. Then the long and bloody civil war that brought China under Communist rule.
王侠出生于1929年,当时中国是一个共和国,南京是中国繁华的首都。从那时侯,全市经历了日本部队的侵略和屠杀。然后,在中国共产党的统治之下,又历经长期的血腥内战。
By the time Wang was of age for university, his family was too poor for him to attend. He dreamed of studying medicine, but he had to set that dream aside. But at age 82, he’s preparing to take a university entrance exam.
王侠那时候正好是上大学的年龄,但他的家境太穷。他梦想着学习医学,但他必须将这个梦想放在一边。但在82岁高龄,他准备参加大学入学考试。
[Wang Xia, Potential University Student]:
“I am a little afraid of the mathematics exam (in the afternoon), because the mathematics in the test book is different from the previous one.”

Though he couldn’t study medicine as a young man, Wang got as close as he could without a costly education, finding a job in a medical clinic.

All these years, Wang Xia has kept up his dream. When the age restriction was dropped from the college entrance exam in 2001, he finally got his chance. He’s taken the test ten times since, but has yet to pass.
这些年来,王侠一直保有着他的梦想。当2001年时,大学入学考的年龄限制被取消后,他终于得到了机会。他已经考了十次,但尚未通过。
Wang lives under a political system that’s left education unavailable to many, and that’s often been harsh toward students, yet he’s still adamant. What will he do if he failed at this, his eleventh try at the entrance exam? Will he take it again?
王侠生活在一个对许多人无法受教育的政治体系下,对学生经常很苛刻,但他仍然坚决。如果他第11次的考试失败,他会怎么做?会不会再考呢?
