Outdoor Poetry Declaiming Hsu ChiCheng
We come here to declaim poetry
We are poets from all corners of the world
We declaim poetry with abandon
In various languages
In various styles of poetry
Actually we just participate in the declamation
Since greater poets have declaimed earlier than us
And their declamation has never been interrupted
The declaimers are running water, blowing wind, waving trees, and dancing birds …
Only our participation adds to its animation
We declaim with abandon
We declaim enthusiastically
To spread the voice of poetry
To fill the world with poetry
To fill the world with peace
In various languages
In various styles of poetry
Declaiming, declaiming
Of course, except for us
Those running water, blowing wind, waving trees, and dancing birds …
When we leave here after declaiming
In spite of the distance, I can still hear the voice of declaiming
Instead of our declaiming in memory
But the declaiming by poets who remain there forever
— Those running water, blowing wind, waving trees, and dancing birds …
Remark: on August 24, 1998, poets participating the 16th World Congress of Poets went to the square in front of the Maebashi Literature Center to declaim poetry. Poets from various countries declaimed in various languages and in various styles of poetry, an animated scene. I myself also declaimed a piece entitled The Mountain Does’nt Speak. And after ten years, I finally compose this poem to commemorate the occasion.
