China and human rights
China and the Chinese government continue to have a fundamental problem with a normal recognition of human rights.
Since the massive student protests on Tian An Men square in Beijing were bloodily crushed in 1989 the situation in China clearly has not improved.
We see the suppression of the Tibetan people, which gets renewed attention because of the planned visit of the Dalai Lama to Belgium in June 2006.
We see the merciless persecution of Falun Gong.
Most of all we see a remaining violation of human rights, which one even cannot openly protest against without threat of immediate liquidation; and the impossibility for organizations to help people because of the corruption and abuse of power in China that seems to get worse and worse, as we can see from the reports of Amnesty International.
Some of these things are brought to our attention by the ’24 hour relay hunger strike for human rights in China’, which was started in China by lawyer Gao Zhisheng (“the conscience of China”), the lawyer who is at the forefront of human rights in China.
This action is spreading internationally and also has reached Belgium and the Netherlands after one month.
It is a good thing that this action is also supported in our country (Belgium and Flanders).
As a Flemish Parliament member, a people’s representative, I, Jan Loones, am irritated by the uncritical rapprochement of Belgium towards China (“the promised land”) purely out of commercial reasons whereby attention is barely paid to human rights.
By supporting the relay hunger strike I, Jan Loones, want to call upon the policy makers to keep paying attention to respect for the diversity of cultures, identity and human rights, also in the contacts with the Chinese authorities.
Jan Loones
