养由基高傲地回答说：“人人都褒奖我，只有你说有东西可以教我。好的，就请你表演射箭，给我看看吧。”

观众说：“我不是要教你射箭，你对这已十分在行了。我只想告诉你：趁自己仍在全盛时期就光荣退休。如果等到太疲倦而射不中时才住手，那就前功尽废了。”

The Archer

In the State of Chu there was once an archer by the name of Yang Youji who could shoot with great precision.

Yang Youji made his living performing archery shows. It was usual for him to receive rounds of thunderous applause from the audience after every performance.

One day an onlooker walked up to Yan Youji, who was beaming with pride.
“You are indeed a marvellous shot,” observed the onlooker. “Still, there is one thing I can teach you.”

“Everybody praises me for my skill,” Yang Youji replied haughtily. “You’re the only one who says you’ve something to teach me. Very well, show me how you shoot!”

“I’m not going to teach you archery,” said the onlooker. “You know that well enough. I just want to tell you this: Retire while you’re still in glory. If you wait until you’re too tired and miss your shots, all your previous efforts will be wasted.”
