曾经我一到汽车该做MOT之前就会紧张， 根本没察觉到哪里会有问题的时候， 简直每次都得花七八百镑才能把车拿回来，也真不知附近这个修车行，是不是因为小女子不懂车而随便给我找出点毛病修啊。 明明我曾经老掉牙的福特在别处做MOT时都一次过的。 所以，找一个可信的地方做MOT还是很重要的一件事。
为找到一个可以安心做MOT的地方，本文所要介绍的是由各地地方政府运营的MOT中心。
很多英国当地政府（Local Councils）有他们自己的MOT检测站，为他们自己的车辆，如巴士或货车做MOT，根据法律规定，这些检测中心必须向公众开放。由于他们一般只做测试，不做维修，所以没有任何动机去找到任何不存在的故障达到赚钱的目的。
而 且地方政府MOT检测站的员工也欢迎公众，因为在地方政府普遍缩减开支的情况下，越多公众使用便越能确保他们的工作位置。 所以一般这些MOT检测站的公众反馈都很好，要么总是能通过测试，或与其它做MOT的修车厂比较需要更少的维修，而且地方政府的MOT检测站的工作质量 往往是最好的，他们严格执行安全测试。
网上曾有这样一个例子，有一个人在当地一家车厂做MOT时，被告知他的车需要花700镑维修，他又 把车送到当地政府检测中心，结果是无需做任何维修 就通过了，他于是把那个车厂举报到当地的贸易标准部门（Trading Standards department），该部门把车从新测试了一次，结果又通过了MOT测试，于是他写信给车商，以该车厂“不遵守道路交通法”（non- compliance with the Road Traffic Act）为理由要求退还他的MOT检测费，结果车厂乖乖地退了款。

在北爱尔兰，所有的MOT检测站都是政府办的，都不进行维修，并有一个固定的MOT检测费，并有一些不同的规定（例如，第一次MOT是新车四年后才需要做）。您可以从 网站找到更详细的信息和离您最近的检测站。
也有一些私人车厂仅做MOT不做维修，那么同样的逻辑也同样适用。当然也有许多修车厂既做MOT也做维修，但完全是诚实和值得信任的，如果你附近有这样的修车厂，当然是最好的。
复检的费用
如果你的车没有通过MOT，经过修复后，它需要被重新检测。复检可免费或优惠，取决于你的车第一次检测的地方。如果你的车是在做MOT的同一个地方被修好的，在10天之内是免费复检，如果是在其它地方修好的，通常在第二天的工作日结束时交回MOT测试中心重检也是免费的。
如果MOT是在当地政府检测站做的，修复是在别处做的，如果10天内回到当地政府的检测中心做局部复检，复检费是半价，这个规则不仅适用于政府检测站，实际上适用于所有检测站。每个整MOT允许有一个局部复检。
