Heart’s Sound/ink and color painting
A famous painter of the older generation once painted a landscape painting in which he wrote down a few words. The basic meaning of his words was that because he failed to paint the sound of the water, he dared not to write down his thoughts. Such were the lofty demands that he imposed upon himself.
I also encountered a painter who painted a Buddhist monk standing by a riverbank, listening. The eaves and roof tiles of a small temple are visible in an inconspicuous spot amidst the forest of a saddle between distant mountains. The painting bore the character “Bell.” I felt a rush of inner recognition when I saw this.
So, what thoughts should I write down for this painting? To tell the truth, I didn’t plan ahead of time before I started the painting, nor had I made a draft. I just painted different patches of purple, blue, and black, and then went from there. Because the painting doesn’t carry any extra meaning, if I had to give it a topic I would call it my “heart’s sound.”@
