Kingfisher
Kingfisher sings“Guan guan”along the river bank. A gentleman pursues a lovely young maiden.
Water fringe, long and short, sways left and right. The gentleman drifts, dreaming of the young beauty.
Courts, but engages her not, thinks of her day and night, Such a long, long night, tossing and turning.
Water fringe, long and short, gathering left and right. The lovely young maiden’s and suitor’s stars alignlike qin and se1–in seamless harmony.
Water fringe, long and short, coupling left and right. The radiant maiden marries; drums throb and bells peal. Ecstasy!
Cloth-Vine
The cloth-vine spreads–across the middle of the valley. So prosperous; the leaves, luxuriant. A gold finch alights on a bushy perch To warble a poignant air.
The cloth-vine spreads–across the middle of the valley. So prosperous; the leaves, luxuriant. Boil them for fibers fine, fibers coarse. Weave them into garment cloth.
I ask my master for leave To go home.
“I want to wash my skirt and underwear.”
In truth, I want to see my parents.
Cocklebur
Woman:“Plucking, plucking cockleburs; I cannot fill this shallow bucket. Missing him so, I cannot go on…I’ll leave the bucket by the roadside.”
Man:“Climbing up this rocky hill…My horse tires. I’ll fill my golden wine cup…To escape my misery in drink.
“Climbing up this high mountain…My horse falls ill. I’ll fill my ivory wine cup…Submerging my pain in wine.
“Climbing up this high dirt hill…My horse trembles. My driver can no longer walk…Alas, alas, I am in agony.”
