The Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament, Reporters Without Borders, International Federation of Journalists, the former Minister of Culture and Education and Italian senators have all written letters to Eutelsat, asking them to change their decision and continue NTDTV’s broadcast into Asia.

歐洲議會綠黨及歐洲自由聯盟黨團、記者無國界組織、國際記者聯盟，義大利的前文化教育部長與參議員，都紛紛寫信給歐衛公司，要求他們改變他們的決定，繼續對亞洲播放新唐人電視的節目。

Twenty-eight senators in the US Parliament have signed a letter addressed to the US president, George Bush, asking President Bush to Support NTDTV’s free flow of information.

在美國國會的28位參議員，已經簽署了一封信函遞交給美國總統喬志‧布什，要求布什總統支持新唐人電視的資訊自由放送。

US congressmen Christopher Smith and Tom Lantos co-signed a “dear colleague” letter, asking President Bush to exert pressure on Eutelsat so that NTDTV’s transmission to the Asia region can continue. In less than two days, NTDTV gained 28 senators’ support in signing the letter.

美國國會議員克里斯多福‧史密斯與湯姆‧蘭特士，兩人共同署名了一封「親愛的同仁」信函，要求布什總統對歐衛公司施加壓力，以使新唐人電視對亞洲地區的播放能夠繼續。在不到二天的時間，新唐人電視得 了28位參議員的支持，簽署了這封信函。

【講解】我們分析一下transmission播送這個字。Trans- 這個字首是across穿越的意思, -miss, -mit則是to send的意思，如mission就是送出去的「任務、使命」，missile就是發送出去的「飛彈」。所以transmission合起來就是to send across播送的意思。以trans-為字首的新聞字有：translate翻譯，transaction交易，transcend超越，transcript文稿。-script是to write的意思，主播念的新聞稿就叫做transcript。

Transmission的動詞是transmit, 用-mit造字的有emit（散發）, submit（遞送）,e-是out之意，所以to send out就是散發。Sub-是under之意，所以to send from under就是遞交、遞送之意。

World wide Chinese pro-democratic activists, dissidents, viewers and supporters of NTDTV have used various methods to show their support for NTDTV.

全世界中國的民運份子、異議份子、新唐人的觀眾與支持者，已經使用各種不同的方法，表示他們對新唐人電視台的支持。

【講解】pro-democratic activists是支持民主的活動份子，就是指民運份子。Dissident是異議份子，這我們在前幾講中有以字根字首的方式分析過了。Various是各種不同的，在新聞英語中是很常見的形容詞。

They condemn the CCP for using economic interest and political pressure on Eutelsat.

他們譴責中共對歐衛公司使用經濟利益與政治壓力。

【講解】condemn是譴責之意，記者還會用blame, blast, denounce, slam, slash, lash out等表示譴責。

They call on Eutelsat to protect Asians’, and especially Chinese mainlanders’, right to information and to continue their contract with NTDTV.

他們呼籲歐衛公司保護亞洲人、特別是中國大陸人士，對資訊知的權利，並且與新唐人電視續約。

【講解】call on就是advocate呼籲之意。
