The Beautiful And The Ugly
When Yang Zi was travelling to the State of Song, he spent the night at an inn. The inn-keeper had two wives. One was beautiful and the other ugly.
The ugly woman was much respected, but the beautiful woman was given a cold shoulder. Out of curiosity, Yang Zi asked the inn-keeper why it was so.
“Well,” replied the inn-keeper,”the beautiful woman is vain because of her looks. Her vanity turns me off. I don’t see her beautiful. The ugly woman is pleasant because of her looks. Her warmth pleases me. I don’t find her ugly.”
As soon as Yang Zi returned home, he bade his disciples, “Remember this well: If you remain humble even though you excel others, you’ll be respected everywhere you go.”
